From a shared need to a European logistics innovation platform
ALICE was created to give Europe’s logistics and supply chain community a common voice, a shared strategy and a collaborative platform for innovation.
Launched in 2013, ALICE, the Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe, was officially recognised by the European Commission as the European Technology Platform for logistics in July of the same year. Its creation built on earlier European initiatives, including the WINN project, the logistics activities of the European Green Cars Initiative (logistics section) and EIRAC, the European Intermodal Research Advisory Council.
From the outset, ALICE brought together industry, research, public authorities and logistics stakeholders to address one central challenge: how to make European logistics more efficient, competitive, sustainable and resilient.

Timeline showing the development of ALICE from its launch in 2013 to its current role in advancing zero-emission logistics, the Physical Internet and innovation deployment in Europe.
Building a common direction for logistics innovation
ALICE was founded at a time when Europe needed a more integrated approach to logistics and supply chain innovation.
Improving logistics performance requires collaboration across the full ecosystem: shippers, logistics service providers, transport operators, terminals, infrastructure managers, technology providers, researchers, public authorities and associations. ALICE was created to connect these actors and help them work towards shared priorities. This collaborative model remains fundamental to ALICE today.
From roadmaps to impact
Over the years, ALICE has contributed to shaping the strategic direction of logistics innovation in Europe through roadmaps, Thematic Groups, European projects, policy dialogue and knowledge-sharing activities.
Its work has supported progress in key areas such as zero-emission logistics, the Physical Internet, digital and data-driven logistics, urban logistics, supply chain collaboration and interconnected logistics networks.
Today, ALICE’s role goes beyond defining research priorities. The platform increasingly supports the path from innovation to deployment, helping promising solutions move closer to real-world use and measurable impact.
A growing European community
ALICE has developed into a recognised European community for logistics and supply chain innovation.
Its members and partners work together to exchange knowledge, identify barriers, shape research and innovation agendas, support policy development and accelerate the uptake of solutions that improve sustainability, competitiveness and resilience.
Looking ahead
ALICE’s history is rooted in collaboration. Its future is focused on impact.
As Europe advances towards climate neutrality, digitalisation and stronger industrial resilience, ALICE will continue to connect stakeholders, align priorities and support logistics innovation that delivers value for industry, society and the environment.
