Innovation landscape

More content will be available soon.

The logistics innovation landscape is changing rapidly. Freight transport and logistics are being shaped by decarbonisation, digitalisation, circularity, automation, resilience, scarcity of resources, geopolitical developments, societal expectations and new technologies.

ALICE helps its members and the wider logistics sector to understand these changes better, anticipate their impact, and identify where innovation is needed most in support of a clear objective: zero-emission freight transport and logistics that strengthen European competitiveness and welfare in a global context.

Technology, digitalisation, automation, innovation and collaboration are the key drivers of this transition.

Understanding a changing landscape

Innovation in logistics is shaped by market needs, policy objectives, regulatory frameworks, technological developments and operational realities across supply chains. Innovation in logistics is shaped by market needs, policy objectives, regulatory frameworks, technological developments and operational realities across supply chains.

For companies and public authorities, this creates a complex decision-making environment. It also creates opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, strengthen resilience, develop new services and support Europe’s industrial competitiveness. New technologies and concepts can enable more sustainable and efficient logistics operations, but their adoption often depends on interoperability, investment capacity, standards, skills, regulation and cooperation between multiple stakeholders to address interdependencies across them (i.e. several stakeholders need to act and be part of the new solution to be in place).

Resilience is an increasingly important part of this landscape. Climate-related disruption, geopolitical instability, energy uncertainty, cyber risks and supply chain vulnerabilities are changing how logistics systems are planned, managed and assessed. Logistics stakeholders need to reduce exposure to disruption while also improving adaptation, flexibility, visibility and continuity of operations.

ALICE brings these dimensions together through the ALICE 4 Impact approach. By connecting trends, technologies, policy developments and operational needs, ALICE helps members gain relevant knowledge, identify innovation priorities and address the conditions needed for adoption and scaling.

The ALICE innovation landscape

ALICE structures the innovation landscape around three connected dimensions.

Megatrends

Megatrends define where innovation opportunities are emerging. They reflect major shifts in logistics and supply chains, shaped by policy, regulation, technology, societal needs and environmental priorities, such as decarbonisation and circularity, digitalisation and smart logistics, automation in supply chains, resilient and agile supply chains, scarcity of transport, storage, energy and space capacity.

Application domains

Application domains define where innovation creates practical value. These are the operational environments in which logistics challenges are encountered, evaluated and resolved.

They include e-commerce, retail and FMCG logistics, distribution networks, groupage, multimodal freight transport, urban logistics, ports, terminals, warehousing, logistics IT systems and software.

By working through these domains, ALICE ensures that innovation is connected to real operational needs and deployment conditions.

Enabling technologies and concepts

Key enabling technologies and concepts define how innovation can be implemented.

They include the Physical Internet, electrification of road transport, rail and waterborne technologies, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G and 6G, digital twins, data spaces, blockchain, robotics, automation, connected assets and advanced warehousing, handling and transhipment systems.

These technologies create opportunities for more interoperable, efficient and collaborative logistics systems. Their value increases when they are combined with clear standards, reliable data sharing, supportive policy frameworks, viable business models and strong cross-stakeholder collaboration.

Roadmaps & publications

Alongside these three dimensions, ALICE roadmaps and publications translate the innovation landscape into strategic guidance, research and innovation priorities, and practical recommendations for the logistics sector.

They help stakeholders understand future developments, identify collaboration opportunities and align innovation activities with European policy, funding and deployment priorities.

From landscape to action

ALICE uses this innovation landscape to support developments in strategic research and innovation agendas, roadmaps, European projects, policy input, knowledge exchange and innovation uptake.

This includes:

  • developing roadmaps for zero-emission logistics, the Physical Internet, urban logistics and other priority areas
  • identifying research and innovation needs for European, national and regional programmes
  • supporting public and private R&I projects
  • mapping high-potential innovations and results from projects
  • connecting innovators, companies, researchers, public authorities and investors
  • promoting successful implementations through events, brokerage activities and the Logistics Innovation Award
  • supporting members with insights on technology, policy, market trends and deployment barriers

Through this work, ALICE helps bridge the gap between research results and real-world impact.

Building readiness for the future

The innovation landscape helps ALICE members make more informed strategic decisions.

It supports organisations in anticipating regulatory and technological change, understanding cross-stakeholder interdependencies, identifying collaboration opportunities and preparing for innovation adoption at scale.

By connecting trends, technologies, policy and real operational needs, ALICE helps ensure that logistics innovation delivers value for European industry, society and the environment.
