Freight transport and logistics are evolving in response to long-term megatrends affecting the production, transportation, storage and distribution of goods. Climate neutrality, circularity, digitalisation, automation, resilience, resources and infrastructure constraints, geopolitical developments, and changing societal expectations are all redefining how logistics systems operate.

These developments create new requirements for the sector. The sector needs to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, strengthen resilience, make better use of assets, infrastructure, and support Europe’s competitiveness in a global context.

Individual companies need to adapt fast to an evolving landscape to remain competitive so adaptation and innovation is in the core of their success.

ALICE connects these strategic challenges with research, innovation and practical implementation. Through ALICE 4 Impact approach, ALICE brings together industry, research organisations and public authorities to identify priorities, share knowledge and support the uptake of solutions that can contribute to cleaner, more connected and more resilient logistics systems.

Innovation landscape

Understanding the direction of logistics innovation requires a clear view of the forces guiding the sector and the conditions in which new solutions are developed. The innovation landscape brings together megatrends, application domains, enabling technologies, roadmaps and publications to provide this wider context. It connects developments such as climate neutrality, digitalisation, automation, resilience and resource constraints with the operational environments where innovation is tested, validated and deployed.

From megatrends to logistics priorities

Megatrends provide the context for logistics innovation. They influence investment decisions, policy frameworks, technology development and operational planning across supply chains.

ALICE monitors these developments and translates them into shared research and innovation priorities. This work is reflected in ALICE roadmaps, Thematic Groups activities, European projects, policy input and innovation uptake activities.

Innovation grounded in logistics operations

Applied Research & Innovation creates value when it is directly connected to real operational environments. Application domains describe where logistics innovation is tested, validated and deployed. They include logistics processes, transport modes, multimodal operations, geographical contexts and industry sectors. This perspective helps connect new solutions with the conditions needed for implementation, such as infrastructure readiness, data availability, business models, regulation and stakeholder cooperation.

Technologies and concepts enabling change

Enabling technologies and concepts provide the tools, systems and capabilities needed to improve logistics operations. The Physical Internet, road transport electrification, digital technologies, data spaces, artificial intelligence, digital twins, robotics, automation, and technologies for multimodal rail and waterborne logistics all play an important role. Their impact depends on how they are integrated into logistics processes, existing systems, standards, investment plans and operational requirements.

Strategic guidance and shared knowledge

ALICE roadmaps and publications translate the innovation landscape into strategic guidance, research and innovation priorities, and practical recommendations for the logistics sector.

They support alignment between industry needs, European policy objectives, research programmes and deployment activities. They also provide a shared knowledge base on topics such as zero-emission logistics, the Physical Internet, urban logistics, data sharing, artificial intelligence, supply chain collaboration and the increased use of rail and waterborne transport.

From research results to uptake

Europe generates a broad range of logistics innovation through EU-funded projects, pilots, industrial initiatives, start-ups and collaborative research.

ALICE Innovation Uptake activities give visibility to these results and help connect them with operational experience, market needs and future deployment pathways. This includes innovative solutions, use cases, proofs of concept and knowledge resources from across the ALICE community.

Innovative solutions

Discover technologies, services, processes, methodologies and business models developed through EU funded projects, industrial initiatives and wider ALICE ecosystem. Innovative solutions can be explored by application domains and technologies. They address logistics challenges including decarbonisation, digitalisation, automation, resilience, resource efficiency, better use of assets, etc.

Use cases and proofs of concept

Use cases & proofs of concept provide structured examples of innovation tested, validated or implemented in logistics environments. They document the operational context, problem addressed, technologies applied, partners involved and maturity of the solution.

ALICE Knowledge Platform

The ALICE Knowledge Platform is a shared knowledge hub for freight transport and logistics innovation.

It brings together information from research and innovation projects, ALICE activities, implementation cases, companies, experts, funding opportunities, the Innovation Marketplace and specialised resources such as papers, reports, videos and presentations.

Contributing to Europe’s logistics innovation ecosystem

Logistics innovation depends on collaboration across sectors, modes, technologies and policy areas. No single organisation can address the transition alone.

ALICE provides a neutral platform where stakeholders can exchange knowledge, define common priorities and connect research results with implementation experience. By linking the Innovation Landscape with Innovation Uptake, ALICE supports the development of logistics systems that are more sustainable, resilient, efficient and competitive.
