Systems & Technologies for Interconnected Logistics

Supporting interoperable digital logistics systems by connecting data exchange, digital twins, smart assets, connectivity and artificial intelligence with real operational needs.

Digital technologies are essential enablers for more connected, efficient, resilient and sustainable logistics systems. TG3 focuses on their application in logistics, with particular attention to interoperability, standardisation and the conditions needed to support their deployment across different logistics contexts.

ALICE Thematic Group 3 (TG3) structures its activities around three main pillars: Data Spaces & Digital Twins, including EMDS, eFTI and standards; Smart Assets & Connectivity, including IoT and 5G/6G; and Artificial Intelligence in Logistics, including links to robotics and autonomous logistics.

Recent activities

Scope and strategic focus

TG3 addresses the exploration, adoption and interoperability of digital technologies across freight transport and logistics.

Its work focuses on the conditions needed for digital solutions to move from concepts and pilots towards operational use. This includes interoperable data exchange, data spaces, Digital Twins, standards, smart assets and connectivity, AI applications, and the conditions and prerequisites needed for deployment.

TG3 provides a coordination space where ALICE members can examine digital approaches, share use cases and lessons learned, assess technology maturity and deployment conditions, identify Research & Innovation gaps, and connect project evidence with wider logistics needs and EU policy developments.

Thematic Group 3 contributes to the following long-term impact

Decarbonisation

by promoting harmonised and standardised technologies and practices across Data Spaces & Digital Twins, Smart Assets & Connectivity and Artificial Intelligence in Logistics

Digitalisation and automation

by exploring how digital technologies can support more efficient logistics operations

Resilience

by exploring how digital technologies can support more resilient logistics operations

TG3 provides cross-cutting digital and system enablers that can be applied across other ALICE Thematic Groups and logistics application domains, connecting technology developments with operational needs and deployment conditions.

Main focus areas

Data exchange, data spaces and eFTI

TG3 works on trusted data exchange and interoperability across logistics chains. This includes developments linked to data spaces, electronic freight transport information, DTLF activities, EDIC-related work, federated data-sharing approaches and practical implementation conditions for digital freight information.

The focus is on how logistics actors can exchange data in a reliable, secure and interoperable way, addressing governance, access rights, data sovereignty, operational requirements and the practical prerequisites for implementation.

Digital twins for logistics decision support

Digital Twins can support planning, monitoring, simulation, scenario assessment and operational decision-making in logistics.

TG3 explores Digital Twins through logistics use cases, focusing on their value, maturity, barriers and prerequisites for deployment, and on their connections with data spaces and interoperable data exchange.

Artificial Intelligence in logistics

Artificial intelligence is increasingly relevant for for logistics planning, prediction, optimisation, decision support and automation.

TG3 addresses AI through real logistics use cases, with attention to maturity, adoption readiness, data availability, integration with existing systems, governance and scaling conditions. The group also links AI with robotics and autonomous logistics where these applications are relevant to logistics operations.

Smart assets, IoT, 5G and 6G connectivity

Smart assets and connectivity are operational enablers for digital logistics. IoT, 5G and emerging 6G services can support real-time visibility, safety, coordination and automation readiness across logistics processes.

TG3 focuses on deployment conditions and integration needs, especially in ports, hubs, terminals, corridors and urban logistics where connected assets and reliable data flows are critical.

Interoperability and standardisation

Digital logistics depends on systems that can work together across organisations, platforms and modes.

TG3 promotes harmonised and standardised technologies and practices aligned with EU policies, while connecting logistics implementation needs with relevant projects, initiatives and standardisation communities. The Memorandum of Understanding with the Open Logistics Foundation also supports the exploration of open-source logistics solutions.

Use cases and deployment readiness

Use cases are a central instrument for TG3. They provide structured evidence on where digital technologies create value, their level of maturity, the barriers to deployment and the prerequisites needed for wider adoption.

TG3 collects and consolidates use cases across its three main pillars: Data Spaces & Digital Twins, Smart Assets & Connectivity, and Artificial Intelligence in Logistics, building a structured repository that supports ALICE guidance, R&I priorities and technology deployment.

From strategy to impact

TG3 translates digital logistics priorities into practical knowledge on interoperability, adoption and deployment readiness. The Thematic Group connects project evidence, member experience, policy developments and emerging technologies to identify where digital logistics solutions can create operational value and what conditions are needed for scaling.

TG3 structures this work around its three main pillars: Data Spaces & Digital Twins, Smart Assets & Connectivity, and Artificial Intelligence in Logistics. Across these areas, use cases provide practical evidence on the value and maturity of technologies, barriers to deployment and the prerequisites needed for wider adoption.

TG3 contributes to ALICE 4 Impact by connecting digital technology developments with operational needs, policy frameworks, project results and implementation experience across the logistics ecosystem.
